According to the official website of the Iranian president, the Presidents of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Republic of Turkey issued a joint statement at the end of the 5th Meeting of High Council for Iran-Turkey Strategic Cooperation on Thursday, and stressed that they would take any measures necessary for increasing the volume of trade between the two countries to reach the $30 billion target.
President Hassan Rouhani and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan also expressed deep concerns over the withdrawal of the United States from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and the US re-imposition of unilateral, unfair sanctions by on vast sectors of Iran, as well as the impacts and harms of the sanctions on the lives of civilians and regional trade, welfare and stability.
In the statement, the two countries stressed the importance of further deepening of bilateral relations through continuation of political and economic dialogue.
The two countries also agreed to continue and consolidate friendly relations between the parliaments.
They also underscored that the existing mechanisms for cooperation should be taken the best advantage of against illegal and terrorist activities of PKK and PJAK along the common borders of the two countries.
Iran and Turkey also underlined their willingness to carry out any kind of measures for the realisation of the $30bn trade target.
They further stressed the importance of providing the required guarantee to the private sector to create a secure and safe atmosphere for their investment.
Emphasizing their support of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the two countries expressed deep regret over US’ withdrawal from the nuclear deal and the implementation of unjust sanctions on Iran.
They also stressed that regional and global issues must be resolved through peaceful ways and full respect of international rules and regulations, underscoring their commitment to territorial integrity, political unity and sovereignty of Syria and that the Syrian conflict is only able to be resolved through political solutions.
They announced their expectations that the achievements of the negotiations of the Astana Process by the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Republic of Turkey and the Russian Federation, as the guarantors, would lead to the advancement of the political process.
Referring to the need to fight terrorism and extremism in Syria, they emphasised the need for continued cooperation in the framework of the Astana Process for reducing the suffering of the Syrian people.
By discussing the latest developments in Yemen and the conditions of the people in the country, both countries welcomed the preliminary understanding that was reached through providing the necessary ground by the United Nations, which was achieved during the Swedish talks between Yemeni groups.
They also expressed hope that agreements would be implemented though good intentions the two parties to pave the way for a final agreement through Yemeni-Yemeni talks. Both sides also expressed concern about the dire humanitarian situation in Yemen and urged the acceleration of the delivery of humanitarian aid.
The two countries went on to stress that sustainable peace and stability in Afghanistan would only be possible through the actual Afghan-Afghan peace process that would lead to a political solution.
Declaring their commitment to preserve territorial integrity and the political unity of Iraq as a principle for regional and international peace, they expressed their support for the Iraqi government in its efforts to combat terrorism and proceed with the country’s reconstruction, and the importance of promoting tripartite cooperation between Iran, Turkey and Iraq in the field of economy and security to stabilise the region.
They also emphasized defending the Palestinian cause and the Holy Quds for the whole of humanity and full solidarity with the Palestinian people, and rejected any attempt to change the legal and historical status of the Quds, condemning illegal settlements and destruction and other serious violations of international laws and human rights by the occupying forces.
The two parties also emphasized the importance of cooperation in international organisations such as the Organisation of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the ECO and the D-8, in which both countries are a member.
